As I am so excited about this new organization, I find it both appropriate and necessary to send some love to all of the members by dedicating a page of my blog to them.
Rutgers Student Bakers is the first organization of its kind at Rutgers University, as culinary pursuits are not available to students as a major. As desirous I was of having more opportunities to bake, I cooked up (excuse the pun) the idea to begin a new student organization, focused on creating a community of students passionate about baking as well as about giving back. The organization is affiliated with Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale, which is a non-profit organization that seeks to end childhood hunger in the United States by raising funds with bake sales across the country. I knew about the organization from Food Network, and I thought it would be the perfect way to allow students to bake while also making a difference in the fight against childhood hunger.
Even though we faced multiple obstacles with establishing this organization (selling food typically sends warnings amongst officials anywhere), the organization blossomed and raised over $300 each for Share Our Strength and Rutgers Against Hunger, another hunger-fighting non-profit organization we aid. The members have made cake pops, homemade Girl Scout Cookies, Fudge, and over 1000 cupcakes in the hopes of raising awareness and funds for this great cause.
Our members span every major at Rutgers, from English and Journalism to Biomedical Engineering and Genetics. Nonetheless these students have come together and created a strong community of bakers who never take no for an answer. They always find a way, and for that (amongst everything else) I am overwhelmingly proud of each and every one of them.
